Google will soon begin blocking sexually explicit content on Blogger

For reasons as yet unknown, Google is cracking down on sexually explicit content on its blogging platform. Starting March 23, users will no longer be allowed to share sexually explicit images and video on Blogger.

In addition, older blogs will featuring such content will be made private on that date. Private blogs can only be viewed by their owners and users with whom they’ve been shared.

What’s strange is that Blogger’s content policy still maintains that it does “allow adult content on Blogger, including images or videos that contain nudity or sexual activity. If your blog contains adult content, please mark it as ‘adult’ in your Blogger settings.”

If you’ve still got sexually explicit content up on Blogger, Google recommends that you either remove it, mark your blog as private or take down your blog and export all your posts via Google Takeout.

However, this doesn’t spell a blanket ban on graphic nudity. Google says it “may make exceptions based on artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific considerations or where there are other substantial benefits to the public from not taking action on the content.”

We’ve contacted Google to understand why this change is being put into effect and will update this post when we hear back.
