Kobo’s new Glo HD is a Kindle Voyage rival that’s $70 cheaper

Kobo is about to undercut a lot of e-readers on the market with its new high-resolution Glo HD.

The new e-reader features a backlit 6″ touchscreen, and its 300 ppi resolution would put it in league with Retina-class displays on smartphones for sharpness. That should theoretically make the device appear more paper-like than lower resolution displays.

It’s closest competitor would be Amazon’s Kindle Voyage, but that device costs $70 more; the Glo HD is priced at $129.99 (€129.99/£109.99).

Of course, there’s more to an e-reader than just resolution – contrast, refresh rate and reflectivity all matter, not to mentions features apart from the display – but Kobo’s newest device is at least compelling on paper.

The e-reader will be available from May 1 in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, May 22 in France, and June 1 in the UK, Italy, Netherlands, Germany and Spain.
